Hiking Hermon Mountain #9

I've never raced or coached a team at Hermon Mountain, but two of my brothers trained there when they raced for the UMaine Black Bears in the 1960s and 1970s. Hermon Mountain's summer slopes are immaculate, a lot like a golf-course on a hill. In all my travels to hike ski areas this summer, I've never seen anything quite like these smooth trails.

At the top of the mountain, gorgeous views of Hermon Pond and a long-distance silhouette of Mount Katahdin inspire. This little ski area's race hill doesn't have a lot of terrain change, but there's an unusual starting hut with a ramp that shoots the racer into the course. It doesn't look like a racer is able to skate down the ramp. The one-story lodge is rugged and comfortable. I'm impressed with Hermon Mountain; the local communities should be thrilled to have such a ski hill available.

Unusual start hut... it looks like the sidewalls don't allow a skier to skate.

I was walking out to take a picture of the Hermon Mountain sign
and Bailey wanted nothing to do with more walking in 80+ degree heat.
Fair enough... you've earned a say.
