Tom Newkirk and I met 29 years ago. I'd applied to a graduate program at UNH and he was a professor on staff who also worked as an acquisitions editor for Heinemann Publishing. Over the years, we've found time to hike here and there in western Maine, especially when he's visiting a lake in central Maine. I'm lucky to have such a smart, interesting friend who also loves to hike.
